Director Juraj Herz in Terezín

We are delighted to welcome director Juraj Herz as a special guest of our conference. Herz`s feature film debut is regarded as the best film adaptation of Hrabal`s prose: Sběrné surovosti / Scrap Brutalities (1965).The darkly absurd Spalovač mrtvol / The Cremator followed in 1968.

2909_kat_transport_z_raje On Saturday, Sept 6, we will show the film Transport z ráje / Transport from Paradise (1962), directed by Zbyněk Brynych, based on book and script of former inmate of the ghetto, Czech novelist Arnošt Lustig. Juraj Herz, himself a survivor of the Holocaust, not only acted in this early nouvelle vague film about Terezín but also influenced the making of it – as Brynych`s assistant.

Conference in Terezín: „Films from Ghettos and Camps: Propaganda – Clandestine messages – Historical source”

We kindly invite you to the international conference in Terezín!

Date:  4-7 September 2014

Terezín Memorial – Magdeburg Barracks, Tyršova 204  TEREZÍN, CZ

This unique event provides an international forum for a debate on the films made in concentration camps and ghettos in the “3rd Reich”. Propaganda films were shot in the occupied territories such as Poland as early as 1939. A very special location was the so called ghetto of Theresienstadt, the “Hollywood of Concentration Camps” as described by Holocaust survivor H.G. Adler. Inmates (Irena Dodalová & Kurt Gerron) as well as free individuals (Karel Pečený, director of the Czech newsreels company Aktualita) were commissioned to direct and produce these films.

European and American scholars will address questions of exploitation, collaboration, the circulation of these films and how they are understood today. To spark a discussion of the comparative aspect of the ghetto films we decided to choose a former ghetto in Central Europe as our venue. The conference will take place in the Magdeburg Barracks in cooperation with the Memorial Terezín (Památník Terezín).

Events include: A roundtable on “Compromised Films” with Czech and international participants, visit to the exhibition “Truth and Lies” (curated by the Jewish Museum Prague and National Film Archive) in the Magdeburg Baracks in Terezín, tour of the film locations and screenings of the Theresienstadt ghetto films (1942-1945).

The conference language is English.

The capacity of the conference hall is limited, so there is a need to register.
